If you ever find yourself driving though the great state of Ohio, please take a minute and check out what we have to offer. Starting out in Cincinnati, we have the Newport Aquarium, which is probably one of the best in the nation. An hour down the road you have the Air Force Museum in Dayton. This is one of the main attractions in Ohio. I'm from Dayton, and I've been there too many times. You can even go inside a C-130 plane which is really cool. FREE ENTRY is always nice. Then if you go another hour down the road, you get to Columbus. This place is nice because it has one of the best selection of resturants and bars that are relatively inexpensive as well. We also have the Columbus Zoo which is coordinated by Jack Hanna which is nice. Yes Jack Hanna. Then you go 2.5 hours north and you get to Sandusky which has Six Flags, one of the best amusement parks in the world. Ohio isn't that bad. I promise.

You also have the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which is cool.

Cedar Point is the amusement park, not a Six Flags location. But it is still awesome! Dragrace themed coaster? YES

When I was in Cincinnati a few years back I went up there to the museum with my friend and she and I had a great time. So glad she suggested going.

Want to go to the airforce museum quite badly. I live in DC and have access to the Smithsonian Air and Space museum, but my understanding is that the AF museum is on a totally different level.

Starting out in Cincinnati, we have the Newport Aquarium, which is in KENTUCKY.

But Cincinnati has both THE HALL OF JUSTICE (The Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal) and the National Underground Railroad Museum.

Cool? I went out of my way to go to some oddly shaped building with boring booths that displayed things like Madonnas bra. I'm not very difficult to please, but I seriously thought the Rock 'n' Roll of Fame was pretty underwhelming.

I have been there so many times now. The Smithsonian is nice, but the AF museum is actually on a different level. And they have it set up so you go through the various years of aviation history. Beginning with the very first aircraft and ending with drones.

I live in Dayton.

I cannot recommend this post hard enough.

If the Smithsonian Air&Space museums are airplane Mecca, then the NMUSAF is the second most holy site people should visit.

Ohio still claims the Aquarium. Ask everyone in Columbus/Dayton and they all think it's in Cincy.

I would say that the Smithsonian is the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem and the AF museum is Mecca.

As someone who's called myself a musician for a period of time, I was really excited to go to the R&RHOF the first time. I found it incredibly underwhelming.

Well, they're wrong, that shit's on the wrong side of the river.

And the Cincinnati Zoo is better.

This is the best plane museum . . . . . . in the world. I live 30mins from DC. Been to both the Air and Space Smithsonians (DC and Dulles), and damn. They just don't compare to the WPAFM. This place was huge. When I visited a few years ago I spend two full days there.

Dang, I needed this post in 2008. I spend about 6 months in Dayton During the week, then driving home 6 hours to St.Louis. Partly because I just started dating my wife, and the job sucked by the time 5:30 on friday came we were so ready to go.

Stayed in Kettering at some bevertown apartments . The job was removing asbestos out of the old Roosevelt High School. That place was Huge, 2 pools, indoor track, 2 gyms, boxing ring.

I kind of agree. There were some cool things, but I guess over all it wasn't worth the nearly $70 P.O.A. for four of us.

Maybe it wouldn't have been so bad if it was re-branded as the pop culture and music museum, or something along those lines.

It is amazing. My grandparents took me when I was younger and I hope someday I can afford to take my son. It is pretty much the most amazing thing I have ever seen.

I'm so jealous of you. Do you know of any cheap places to stay near the museum? It's almost a 9 hour drive from Binghamton, so there's no way I can do it without a hotel. I got to go when I was younger and I really really really want to take my son who I have worked very hard to ingrain a love of airplanes in.

Fairborn is the closest city, and there are plenty of chain hotels around. Wright State University is also close by, so there is always need for rooms.

It's not a far drive around this area at all. Plan on at least 2 full days to see everything, and get in early if you want to take the shuttle over to the R&D/Presidential galleries on base.

I too live in Dayton and agree with all you say but you left one glaring omission, Kings Island. The Air force museum should be on everyone's bucket list. It's amazing, free, and everyone loves it young and old alike. My kids spend the entire day walking around in awe. The place is like a history book of aviation except instead of pictures you get to look at actual airplanes and uniforms, guns, rockets, bombs, and so much more.
